Its three roots sink into three worlds: that of the gods, that of the ice and that of the giants.

The first goes to the Hvergelmir Fountain, a source of icy waters in Niflheim from whose water cascades and feeds all the rivers of this world. Here dwells the dragon-serpent Nidhoggr, who endlessly gnaws at the root of the world ash.

The second to the source of Mímir, in Jötunheim, where wisdom and intelligence are found. in this fountain odin He gave an eye to be able to drink from it and access the wisdom it provided.

The last to the House of the Norns, in Asgard. Urda (the past), Verdanda (the present) and Skulda (the future) give the giant ash the strength to continually be reborn. These goddesses, in addition to destiny, also regulate the flow of time.
