Stages of the Viking Age according to raids

The epoch viking is marked by his travels and raids, So So we can distinguish four stages:

  • Between 793 to 850 the Vikings began to make raids small in size without much planning, they simply raided and plundered wherever the seas took them.
  • Between 850 and 900 they began to organize themselves, the four great routes emerged and prominent captains began to appear, on the other hand it is at this stage when a tax begins to be collected from kings who wanted avoid their attacks.
  • Between 900 and 980 the four great Viking colonies began to be created (Iceland, Ireland, Western Russia, and Scandinavia).
  • Between 980 and 1062 the Swedish Vikings try to reach Asia, while the Danes focus on the West and the rest of Scandinavia.

Scan Paths

During the second stage the four main routes were established. The Danes and some Norwegians focused mainly along the route West, of which it is they knew two variants: the northern (England, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland and Canada) and the southern (France, Spain, North Africa, Italy and the Byzantine Empire), the north route it was mainly used by the Norwegians (bordering the north coast of Scandinavia to Russia) and the Swedes moved along the sea route Baltic more comfortably (mainly by Finland) and by the eastern route (Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and the Byzantine Empire).
